Haven’t laughed out loud so much in a very long time.

I knew I’d enjoy “The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” but I expected it to be in a juvenile, American Pie way. What I ended up watching was a brilliantly written comedy that never flagged for a second and had me laughing all the way through.

Both Will Ferrell and John C Reilly are fantastic as Nascar drivers and Gary Cole was a revelation as the washed up Dad.

Sure it’s a silly story barely one step up from Pixar’s “Cars” but the one liners just keep coming and coming. The only character which didn’t work was Sacha Baron Cohen’s Formula 1 Racing Driver. I think it was less the writing and more the acting which was just so over the top as to start being annoying.

A few tasters just to give a hint how good this is:

“What has America given the world?” “That’s an easy one. Chinese food, for starters”

“Dear Lord Baby Jesus, lying there in your...your little ghost manger, lookin’ at your Baby Einstein developmental...videos, learnin’ ’bout shapes and colors...”

“98 percent of us will die at some point in our lives”

“We missed you at the wedding. It was really classy. We had a Styx cover band, and a nacho fountain. Check it, it was a nacho fountain.”
