I am a sucker when it comes to baby gadgets, and when I went for wander through Bandon’s latest baby shop, this caught my eye and I was hooked into purchasing it.

Yep, its a bucket for bathing your baby in. Apparently it can be used till they’re 3 years old. I have my doubts about this fact though. Will try and bathe our huge (37lb) 19 month old in it next week and update the review with those results then.

UPDATE: Not a chance of him fitting in. He stood in it and refused to sit so its a no go for older tots here.

Anyway, it was purchased for the purpose of bathing the current 3 month old as my back has been feeling the wear and tear of bending to wash her in the bath and shes too big for the sink! The tummy tub is an opaque plastic bucket basically. It is easy to carry when filled with water as has good handles to grip and is light. It has a wide base to prevent it from toppling and a rubbery ring on the bottom to help it grip to the surface it is on. It is well designed.

The main benefit for my back is that I can sit/kneel on the floor of the bathroom bathing the baby rather than leaning over the bath.

You fill with warm water up to the line that runs all the way around the tub and baby sits in the bottom of the tub legs crossed in front of them. Alternatively you can let baby float in the water with your hand supporting them instead of them sitting unaided as with the first way. The baby can be immersed in the water up to shoulder level and is thus warmer than in a standard bath. At the same time, very little water is used to for the baby bath.

It is recommended for use with premature babies, the position they sit in in the tummy tub mimics the womb, so it helps them to feel secure. According to shop assistant the new CUH maternity wing shall have these in use.

There are additional bits you can buy with it, that include a stand to raise it higher, presumably so that the parent could sit whilst bathing their baby.

It was quite expensive for a glorified bucket at €24 but if it helps save my back and if Síofra continues to enjoy it so much I think its worth it. She absolutely loves it, as you can witness here:

Check out the photos on the website as they show its use much better than I can describe.
